Te Pātaka o Wairau Māori Night Market

‘Nau Mai Haere Mai’ is the welcome call to locals and visitors to a fun-filled event that celebrates Te Ao Māori. ‘Te Pātaka o Wairau Māori Night Market’ is scheduled for 14 September from 4-9pm at Seymour Square and is held under the korowai of mana whenua iwi Ngāti Rārua,  Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Rangitāne ō Wairau,  as an opportunity for the growing number of Māori businesses to show off their wares.

“We’re sharing the theme 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ because the event coincides with Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori commemorating the presentation of the 1972 petition on the Māori Language to Parliament,  and on Friday it’s actually Māori Language Day!   “We want to encourage people to celebrate September as Mahuru Māori and dedicate some space and time to speak Māori. We’re setting up a tent with our whānau who speak fluently to encourage others to practice their reo  and to support making our Māori language strong. Every New Zealander can help strengthen our language and that’s the message we want to convey ”, says project manager, Dr. Lorraine Eade.

“We’re excited about the line-up of stalls and the chance to showcase our Māori talent in Te Tau Ihu - top of the South. Craft stalls range from Taonga by Timoti, Tyed with Essence by Jasmine Luke and Te Uhi o Wairau Tā Moko and Whakairo will be there with talented young Artist Tane Henderson-Deakin.

There will be a range of local family entertainment including DJ Bex, and Te Rerenga o Te Rā, Marlborough Combined Colleges Kapa Haka and Bohally Intermediate Kapa Haka roopu, the soulful sounds of Carolyn Tipene and Tui Caldwell. It’s sure to be a friendly whānau atmosphere where everyone can celebrate and enjoy the fantastic offerings from Te Pātaka o Wairau – our storehouse!

We want to thank our sponsors Redwood Trust.
