Mana Wā Rangatahi Symposium
The Mana Wā Symposium was launched with the support of Te Rau Matatini in 2018 at Haeata Community Campus in Otautahi. The event for local secondary school students and youth organisations focused on the kaupapa of rangatahi well-being with workshops to enable expressions of mana in traditional and contemporary ways. Rangatahi took part in workshops such as waiata-a-ringa, taonga puora, stylists, interactive games and enjoyed uplifting korero from speakers Kenny McFadden and Rā Dallas. A follow-up event was held – the Haeata Hauora Day - dedicated whole of-school event to focus on health and wellbeing for all 391 Year 7-13 students.
Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu brought together local community leaders experienced in mental health promotion and cultural education who were also committed to a Whānau Ora focussed suicide prevention symposium. The strategies implemented encompassed a variety of contemporary and traditional activities that instil culture, identity and connectedness to promote protective factors to achieve and retain wellness.
