Te Kākano Maara Kai Launch
Today Maania and I attended the launch of Te Kākano Maara Kai at Araiteuru Marae in Dunedin. The project leads are Chris Rosenbrock and Wally Te Whaiti operating under the auspices of Kai Tahu ki Otago trading as Tu Mai Ora Whanau Services.
The project objectives are to engage their 'hard-to-reach' whanau in healthy sustainable lifesltyles:
# Ensure healthy food choices are affordable, available and accessible
# Increase the consumption of vegetables in the kainga
# Promote healthy eating and physical activity
# Reduce the impact of poor physical health and nutrition on whanau.
It was a wonderful launch as you can tell from some of the photos. Heaps of tamariki playing round the marae; rangatahi entertaining us with kapa haka; a beautiful walk around the environmental trust gardens who are helping in a mentor/advisory role; and lots of whānau celebrating with a barbeque lunch on a beautiful spring day. They shared their aspirations for rejuvenating the hāngī pit; growing kai for rongoa, for weaving; boxed gardens; terraced gardens - they even had a use for the gorse!
The theme of the launch was ' in growing gardens we also grow whanau'. Produce grown will be used to support whanau; the marae; and the kaumātua flats at Arai te Uru.
A great day to see Whānau Ora in action.
