Whānau Ora Navigator workforce

Research carried out in 2017 to inform the future development of the Whānau Ora Navigator workforce showed they are having a significant impact, particularly for whānau with complex needs. Case narratives demonstrate how whānau, with the support of a Whānau Ora Navigator, made positive progress by taking small steps toward a larger goal. Many whānau experienced challenges that required them to focus on their immediate needs. The relationship between the Whānau Ora Navigator and the whānau was the most important enabler for change. It was authentic, on-going and they were seen as an equal walking alongside whānau. Areas of focus for the work-stream includes reflective learning, induction process improvements, qualifications and recognition, outcome progression framework and strengthening of relationships with key agencies who host or work with the Whānau Ora Navigators.

Navigators In Te Waipounamu

We invest in Navigator roles to support and build whānau capability. Whānau Ora Navigators work alongside whānau to identify their strengths, dreams and aspirations.

Navigators support whānau to access resources, expert support and help coordinate services.

Navigators support whānau to:

  • Work their way with them through crisis and link them to the appropriate services

  • Collaborate, broker services and advocate ensuring their needs are addressed in a holistic way.

  • Help develop a step-by step plan to achieve their goals and aspirations.

  • Identify and strengthen their support networks.

  • Reduce any risk of harm to whānau.

  • Uplift their mana and create opportunities for cultural connectedness.
